Beyond Images is a turn-key curriculum developed by the National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC) and made possible with the generous support of the Dove Self-Esteem Project. The free online lesson plans for grades 4 through 8 fill a gap in media literacy curricula nationally and include activities that make a positive difference in combating appearance-based bullying and negative stereotypes. The curriculum provides the opportunity to explore key issues in today's society around body image and self-esteem as well as media messaging, while developing critical thinking skills. Revised for 2016, the Beyond Images program is a powerful tool in creating authentic learning opportunities for students in the classroom, and fits nicely into collaborative inquiry opportunities in junior and intermediate classrooms.
About the National Eating Disorder Information Centre
Established in 1985, NEDIC is Canada’s only national organization dedicated to helping those impacted by eating disorders and body-image issues by providing information, resources, referrals and support.
With a focus on self-acceptance and building positive self-esteem, NEDIC is committed to the prevention of eating disorders. Through its outreach and education programs, NEDIC provides workshops for students, community groups, teachers and health professionals. NEDIC develops and disseminates information resources including brochures, manuals, posters, bookmarks, and blogs to help increase awareness of eating disorders and risk factors, including low self-esteem, negative body-image and issues such as anxiety, depression, and poor coping skills. NEDIC also operates a national toll-free helpline 1-866-NEDIC-20 to support individuals across the country with information, referrals and support.
Founded as an independent non-profit organization, NEDIC is a program of the University Health Network in Toronto, supported by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Our programs are made possible through the support of generous donors.
Dove Self-Esteem Project
The Dove Self-Esteem Project is very proud of the ongoing partnership with NEDIC since 2004. Together with important partners like NEDIC, we have touched the lives of millions of girls to date, equipping them with critical media literacy skills and self-esteem education to help them reach their full personal potential. Dove envisions a world where beauty is the source of confidence and not anxiety. Since 2005, the Dove Self-Esteem Project has touched the lives of more than one million girls in Canada and almost nine million girls globally, with a mission to reach fifteen million girls by 2015. Women and young girls are encouraged to explore the self-esteem building resources at Dove.ca and Facebook.com/dove, including interactive materials that help mothers, mentors and educators engage girls in a fun exploration and discussion about beauty images.
Why Educators Like Beyond Images
Beyond Images helps provide a safe and comfortable setting for Grade 7/8 students to discuss the challenging issues they face, and questions they have, about their bodies at this age.
How Students Respond to Beyond Images in the Classroom
"The way you look is fine. It's just the attitude that matters."
- Zaneib, Grade 8
